The Mountain, 5/15/18
I wasn’t sure about the mountain at first. I was with the ocean riding a wave when I first heard him whisper my name. But soon, the tide rolled out and I was left laying on my back in the sand.
I could still hear the echo. I followed the sound, bouncing off the walls; uneasy, confused, but intrigued.
I heard him boom “you must earn your time with me”. And I was tested. He said “you must prove you truly want it”, and I persisted.
I entered his domain wearing sturdy, heavy boots to show no fear, while tiptoeing inside them.
As I put my first step down in the pine forest he bellowed my name. Leaves fell from the trees and birds bolted from their hiding spots.
I couldn’t see him yet, as he was guarded by his army. His moat of mountains who desperately wanted to be him.
He demanded to see my face so I lifted my chin straight to the sky, setting down all my weapons and exposing my vulnerability. And from 20,000 feet I was brought straight to my knees.
Trying to sound as mighty as possible, I asked to see his face, too. The earth shook as he laughed, still out of sight.
“You have work to do, little one”.
